Since August 2020, the Kurdistan Regional Government has arrested more than 50 people
in the Badinan region of Iraqi Kurdistan
for criticizing corruption and organizing demonstrations.

Badal Barwary, Omed Barushky, Eyaz Karam, Guhdar Zebary, Shvan Saeed, and Hariwan Essa
have all been targeted by the government in this recent escalation of arrests.

Badal Barwary is a teacher and organizer and Omed Barushky is an independent journalist.

Both Badal and Omed have brought attention to the Kurdistan Regional Government
not paying government employees’ salaries for 6 months.

On August 21, Badal and Omed were imprisoned
for organizing a demonstration urging the government to pay employees.

On October 22, the journalists Eyaz Karam and Guhdar Zebary and the civil society activists Shvan Saeed and Hariwan Essa were also arrested for bringing attention to the government’s corruption.

Badal, Omed, Eyaz, Guhdar, Shvan, and Hariwan are all currently incarcerated at an unknown location.

CPT Iraqi Kurdistan has recently launched the United for Liberation Prisoner Defense Campaign urging the Kurdistan Regional Government to release all of the Badinan prisoners.
